About our work ...
We will be working with six long-established shelters in Andalucia, including a cat shelter. We have had an excellent working relationship with these shelters for a number of years - they are run totally on voluntary donations, are 'no kill' shelters and do not receive any support from government bodies. These factors distinguish them from the local municipal pounds where stray and abandoned dogs are brought and euthanised after a set number of days. Their 'no kill' policy (unless the circumstances are exceptional) means that animals may live many years in the shelter without ever experiencing the love and comfort of their own forever home.
So, we aim to find some of these their own forever homes, initially in Spain, the UK and Switzerland. Ultimately, for the oldest dogs, our goal is to set up a 'golden oldies retirement home' in Spain where these special dogs can be looked after in extra comfort, have cosy beds, more freedom and the chance to enjoy their old age. Each animal is carefully selected by us from one of the shelters. We know each one personally and will have assessed whether or not they will be suitable for rehoming and the type of home to which they will be best suited. You will find about 40 'nobody wants me - forgotten dogs'' on our list, however, we intend to concentrate on homing just a few at any one time to give them the attention that they need.
We aim to find foster places in Spain, the UK or Switzerland - this is the first huge step to these dogs finding a forever home - they are taken out of the shelter environment into one where people can come and meet them and undoubtedly fall in love with them. During their foster period they will be looked after, loved, walked and assessed by our volunteers and re-homing team so that sooner rather than later they will find their own forever family.
Each dog has a history, in many cases a very sad one involving abuse or abandonment. However, this in our eyes makes them even more deserving of a chance of happiness. We have found time after time that these dogs are incredibly adaptable and can fit readily into a home environment where they are grateful for every kindness shown - especially a warm soft bed! Because of their gratitude and desire to please and be loved they are often easily trained, many of them are already good both on and off the lead. Why not read the testimonial of one of our adopters, Alison Fearn, who adopted 2 of our oldies, Colin and Harry? Click on the FIND OUT MORE tab above.
To maintain our work we need to fund raise funds for transport, passports, vaccinations, blood tests and neutering, expenses arising during their stay whilst awaiting adoption, medication expenses where the animals may have an existing medical condition together with the security of maintaining a foster place 'just in case' (for whatever reason) an adoption does not work out. With our rehoming experience this only happens very rarely and if so, for good reason such as illness of the owner. However, we always ensure that the dog comes back into our care. Our biggest funding goal, however, is to establish a home in Spain for 'golden oldies' where these special dogs can put their feet up, relax and reminisce and enjoy being spoilt!
So, will you help? Will you give an older animal a chance? Can you whisper to a forgotten animal that he is not forgotten, to a "nobody wants me animal" that someone does want him? If you you would like to support our work in any way please click on the tab above ...........
